Cincinnati comes to a hault...

In case you haven't heard Cincy was hit pretty hard by the big winter storm that moved across the the MidWest. Since it was the first major storm of the season, it has been confirmed that this city does not know how to handle snow. It all started overnight on Monday, leading into Tuesday. We woke up on Tuesday with about 6 inches on the ground and then yesterday evening it started sleeting and icing, and then wrapped up this morning with another 6 inches of snow. Needless to say...shoveling was not fun :) The pic is one that I took of the back deck.

Katie Bogenschutz...via Aunt Peg -- for theBEST COOKIE in the 1st Annual Kroger Holiday Cookie Extravaganza Taste-Off!!

I made Aunt Peg's wonderful "Snowball Surprise" Cookies for our office Christmas Cookie Competition and I won for Best cookie!!

In case anyone else wants to spread the goodness of Snowball Surprises, here is the winning recipe :)

Ingredients:
~ 1- package of regular Oreo’s
~ 1- 8 ounce brick of regular Cream Cheese
~ 1- package of Kroger White Chocolate Melting Bark (24 ounces)

Instructions:
1. In a food processor, grind the pack of Oreo’s into a fine dust
2. Add the brick of cream cheese to the Oreo dust and mix together until a dough is formed.
3. Roll the dough into little balls (Size = about the diameter of a quarter) and place on cookie sheet.
4. Refrigerate for at least an hour to let the dough firm up.
5. Melt the white chocolate either in a double boiler or in the microwave.
6. Using a toothpick coat the entire ball in white chocolate and set on wax paper to cool
7. Once the white chocolate has hardened, ENJOY!

*Note: Refrigerate cookies once completed because of the cream cheese in the recipe.

3-Alarm fire on Eastern Ave.

The red apartment building next door to our house caught on fire ;ast night/this morning...Here is a link to an article about it. And below is my encounter --

Annie and I are OK, but it has been a long morning to say the least. And the house is OK…thank goodness.

I was woken up at 2:50am by a semi blowing its horn for like a minute so I got up and looked outside and people were running out of the building and yelling to get out. I ran downstairs and saw that the back of the building was a huge fire. So I called 911 (with a bunch of other people) and the proceeded to watch this building turn into the biggest fire I have ever seen…fire was billowing out of all 4 floors windows and people were climbing out of the fire escapes. We had to stay outside from 3am until 6am while they were fighting the fire and then there were fears that the building might collapse. I just feel so bad for the people because they are so poor to begin with and now they are sitting on the street still with red cross and they have nothing.

Our street just opened back up to traffic and it is 10am. It was seriously the biggest fire I have ever seen. I felt like we were in a movie at some points. But I wanted to let everyone know that we are OK and so is the house.

One Point Ike!!!

So I am sure everyone in Cincy knows what happened but for you out of town-er's, i thought I would give you an update...

It is a beautiful day tailgating for the bengals game, and then we enter the stadium...clouds roll in, but still no rain and then incredible winds start up. Apparently they were clocked at 75 mph. It was crazy windy during the entire game, but nothing to be alarmed about, until we leave the disaster of the game and walk outside for out trip home. Trees down, siding and shingles flying, the Ohio River having white caps like the ocean, and no power! We returned home to find out that we have some siding hanging on by a hair, but no further damage, other than lots of trees down. But get this...Duke is saying that people won't have power for 3-4 days!

Annie and I slept at my dad's last night because he had power because of new development and power lines being underground. Annie was lucky enough like the rest of the city for work to be cancelled. But have no fear, by some act of God my office and the Kroger data centers have backup generators, so I am here at work :( Just doesn't seem fair, no does it.

Hope Ike didn't hit anyone else...it really put a true hurricane in perspective cinsidering we only had partial winds. Imagine double the wind plus the rain...not fun!!

I wanted to send an update to everyone about my trip to NYC with Krissy! We had an absolute blast and the weekend flew by, but I wanted to recap some of the highlights for us!! The picture above is Krissy and I waiting in line to go see RENT on broadway! It quite possibly was one of the best days EVER! The show was amazing and I looved it!

Kris and I went to NYC to visit a few friends, ine being Mike Payne. One of my friends from High School and one of Krissy's friends from college. What a small world! Mike was oh so kind to let us stay with him in his brooklyn apartment. Here is a photo from out night out on the town!

On Sunday afternoon, we got in touch with Keith and Amy, who were in the city to go see an exhibit at the MoMA. I was so excited that we got to see them! We went on the tour and lecture on prefabricated houses and then had a nice lunch with them! Krissy, Mike, and I spent the afternoon in the museum since it was a bit rainy outside.

After the museum, we got to meet up with my friend Adam. He went to UC and then moved to the city about 2 years ago. We decided to have a Sunday Funday and hit the bars for a Skee-ball and Darts tournament. Too fun!

Countdown to NYC...

There are actually 2 coutdowns to NYC going on at once...

1.) Krissy and I are making a trip out there together to visit our friend Mike Payne. I am so excited for this trip. We will be there July 26-28. Don't worry, we will take lots of pictures!

2.) It was just announced the Xavier will be playing Duke this year in Rutherford N.J., which is apprently only 12 miles outside of the city, or something. The game is scheduled for Dec. 20th, and if we can find good flights, I definitely want to go to the game :)

Hope everyone's summer is off to a good start -- Any other updates out there?

Rascal Flatts = Tears

Now that we've all seen the completely and totally awesome video that Allie made for Grandma's birthday, I'm wondering if I'm the only one having troubles with a certain song. If you aren't aware, the last song on the DVD is Rascal Flatts, My Wish.

Today at work, someone on the other side of my office had their computer playing random songs from their iPod and guess what song came on? I was enjoying it until I realized I was getting misty-eyed and had to explain to my coworkers that I was not an emotional basketcase, but my cousin made this great video for my Grandma's birthday and it just makes me think of that and only that now.

Is it only me?

Just wanted to share that story with everyone to let you know you're not alone if you can't safely listen to certain songs in public anymore.

Flights to Philly!

Just a heads up in case people were looking for flights to Philly for Keith and Amy's wedding in October. Southwest has a great deal on flights out of Columbus non-stop to Philly for $163.00 roundtrip (Total price including all the taxes and other charges). Our flight is landing Thursday afternoon and we are coming home Sunday afternoon.

Me, Annie, Dad, Gram, Bonnie and Aunt Peg just booked out flights!

A Day at the Races...

So I had my first outing to Kenneland Race track last weekend and it was a blast! It was a much different experience from the Derby or Riverdowns. It was packed, but everyone was in spring dresses or sear-sucker pants. The area around the track is so pretty and I actually got to see some horses, unlike Derby. The only bad this about it is that it is only open 2 months of the year. I unfortch didn't win any money, but had fun losing some. My betting expertise is slim to none, so after memorizing one bet...I was set for the day -- " Race X, $2 extaca Box for Horses A and B" Too bad I never won. We took a bus down and made a day out of it...and when I say bus, I really mean school bus :) If anyone has the chance to go to Kenneland, i highly suggest it!!

XU to the Elite 8

Hello Everyone! Sorry I have been missing for a little while, but things have been quite hectic. But on the good news front...Xavier made it to the Elite Eight and Annie, myslef, and my dad all made the trek out to Phoenix to cheer on the Muskies. The weather was fantastic -- 86 and sunny, and X beat good old Huggins in the game on Thursday. We had a fun day trip to Sedona when Xavier had the day off and got a crazy jeep driver that gave me bruises from the seat belt. Overall, the trip was fabulous!! Enjoy the picture with me and the Musketeer! Go X!!

Thanks Kate for the info and Mom for the email to set me straight. Once I had the correct spelling I was good to go in Google. Grandma had me headed down the wrong track for awhile. Kate provided a great review and the address so Amy and I will see everyone there on the 26th!

So I am sure every grand kid has received a call about the traditional post-Christmas dinner for the 26th. It is scheduled for Maribelle's, which apparently in on Eastern Ave, aka Riverside Drive. However after spending more than 20 minutes on Google maps, city search and cincinnati.com I was unable to find any evidence of the existence of this place to post directions, an address, menus or a review. So if anyone else has any insight please enlighten the rest of us.

So in case anyone in the family has not heard Amy and I are engaged. I proposed on Tuesday, she said yes and we are both very excited. For more details please see the post on my blog, or give me a call. As a note we have NO IDEA yet on when or where we will be getting married, but as we begin to decide these things we will keep everyone updated. We will of course be in Cincinnati for Christmas so we hope to see everyone then.

Meet Milo!

Great things about Milo:

He's pretty. Milo's a chick magnet. And a people magnet in general, I guess. Seriously, people have crossed the street just for the chance to pet this little guy.

His tonge perpetually is sticking out. He is about 8 inches tall and 10 lbs, but somehow figured out how to take off his cone collar (just got neutered) and jump a 30 inch gate. Maybe we should have named him Houdini...
He looks like a dust mop when he lies down.

If you can't tell, all is going VERY well with our new puppy.

If anyone was worried about us after the crazy weather in Chicago yesterday, we're fine. there were trees and power lines down all over our neighborhood, but our cars, apartment and selves are okay. The only damage is that our fenced-in backyard isn't exactly fenced-in anymore, but otherwise, everything's good.

I have to admit, I am not much of a dog lover, but if you get that little pup and give it a short hair cut, I think he will be adorable!! And on a side note...do you know who is from Joliet, IL...Adrienne Curry who married the Brady Bunch guy...haha (I watch way too much reality TV)

Now as for weekends to come visit...Mark you calendar for sure for Nov 30,Dec 1 and 2...I am going to go do some Xmas shopping with a few friends :) But I was also looking at my calendar to see when I could come before then (since Christmas is a little ways off)...it starts to get a little tricky due to the Bengals season starting :-D, but what about either Sept 28-30, or October 5-7?? Let me know if either of those weekends work for you! And if anyone esle wants to join...just let me know!

Otherwise, things on my end are going well, nothing too crazy planned for the month of August except Bengals preseason games :) Annie and my dad will be the main planers for the Bengals tailgates this year,s o if there are games that people are planning on attending we (as in me, Annie, my pops, Aunt Cheryl, Uncle Marty, and Kev-man) would love for you to join!!

Just an update on what's going on with me...

This weekend, Andy and I are planning on going to Joliet, IL to visit a shih tzu breeder. The dog we're thinking about getting is below:

He's almost 6 months old, and his name is currently Baby Joey, though that will definitely change. If we decide to get him, we're open to any name suggestions. Also, we won't be keeping his hair that long, either. He'll be getting a "puppy cut" and will look more like this if we get him:

We had to go with this breed because of my allergies (shih tzus have hair, not fur, so they don't shed) and their size (apartment living in Chicago) but their little ewok faces are so cute that we're not worried. We're also familiar with the breed since I used to dog-sit a couple of them back in Athens from time to time.

If we decide to go for it, I'll let you all know and probably ask for any name suggestions.

Looks like I'm a little late--all of you have pretty much covered all of the "best parts of the weekend." I enjoyed them all. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures to post either. Like Annie, I packed my camera but never took it out of my bag. I think Kristin captured most of the best moments on camera anyway. Of course I loved Turbo Yahtzee as well; however, the voice of the Sorry game proved a bit intriguing as well...

Hands down the best moment of the weekend is when Keith had this brillant idea about the Blog! I absolutely love it and think it is a great idea! I would have to say my next fave part of the weekend was Turbo Yahtzee (can't you see how intense it got, I kind of look like a professional Yahtzee player in Krissy's Pic).

Overall the weekend was a blast and it was great to see all of the out of towners and meet out new family member, Rasheed. I can't wait to see everyone again. Also, I am going to Chicago to visit Andy and Kris if anyone wants to join. I will be looking at the calendar soon to pick a weekend. And Annie and I are potentially going to Philly in Sept. :)

PS..Keith, I didn't know that we shared a fave movie...we will have to have a Wallstreet viewing next time we are together :)

So I'd have to say my top three moments of the weekend would have to be:

1) TURBO YAHTZEE!!!
2) Spitting a cherry pit 32 feet. (Thanks for measuring and exposing my weird talent, Uncle Tom.)
3) Keith and Don getting lost... twice. (Once in the woods and once on the roads.)

Of course the whole weekend was great, and Uncle Bill automatically hits the tops of the charts with the ghost and Boone's Farm vintage July 17, 2007.

Thank you for setting this up. It is so much fun to be around you guys that this will provide me needed levity in between visits.

I am not quite sure what was my favorite part of the weekend, but I think the ghost opening the drawer ranks up there. The wine tasting takes second. Our hole-in-one (ok we were given a stroke with a 2) ranks 3rd. Learning that my college roommates Pediatrician father in Lima, Ohio cut Andy open when he was a little kid was a pretty amazing discovery as well!

So the annual summer get together for 2007 wraps up I am posting this first entry to the family blog sitting in the Columbus airport awaiting the departure of our flight to Philly. The delay is not to bad for the summer, only 90 minutes so far. The biggest impact will be I might have to wait until tomorrow to watch tonight's episode of Ice Road Truckers.

Anyway I am going to email the user name and password for the blog and email to some family members as a test to see if this little experiment will work. I guess for a first test, I ask people to post their pictures from the trip for everyone to share.
